Scott Haber on Popular Fishing Destinations in Omaha, Nebraska
Nebraska is a landlocked region that ranks among the driest states in the country, with water accounting for less than 1 percent of the state’s total area. Even so, the state is home to more than two dozen natural and man-made lakes; Lake McConaughy on its own provides anglers with upward of 30,500 acres. There are also several major rivers, including the Cheyenne River, as well as approximately 450 lakes and streams open to public fishing.
Located not far from the Nebraska Sandhills, the Merritt Reservoir is a popular destination for anglers in Nebraska. As a reservoir, the area enjoys a reliable supply of clean water, which supports a diversity of fish. Merritt is especially well known for its walleyes, muskies, northern pike, and catfish, though several additional species make the reservoir home.
